Sappho

Asteroid 80 Sappho is named after the renowned ancient Greek poetess from the island of Lesbos. Sappho herself was a mortal poet, not a goddess in Greek mythology, but was so celebrated in antiquity that she earned the nickname the “Tenth Muse”

The asteroid 80 Sappho is a large, S-type (stony) asteroid discovered by English astronomer Norman Pogson on May 2, 1864. He named it after the famous lyric poet who lived around 600 BCE. It orbits the Sun in the main asteroid belt and has an estimated diameter of approximately 52 miles.

Sappho lived on the island of Lesbos and was a prolific and highly respected poet in Archaic Greece. She is believed to have led a female religious community or chorus dedicated to Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. Though only fragments of her work survive, her poetry was highly influential. Her strong themes of love and devotion to women are the origin of the terms “sapphic” and “lesbian”.

In astrological practice, the asteroid Sappho is often analyzed in natal charts to gain insight into a person’s expressions of love, sexuality, artistic talent, and emotional depth, particularly concerning themes of queer identity and female empowerment. Astrologers link its placement to:
