Venus

The Brightest Planet in the Sky

When the planet Venus appears in the sky she is called by either of two names: the Morning Star or the Evening Star. What makes her so bright? A thick layer of white clouds surrounds the planet Venus and reflects approximately 70% of the sunlight back out into space. Since Venus orbits so close to Earth, that reflection gives her the glow of the second brightest object in the night sky after the Moon.

When she rises before the Sun as a Morning Star, she is defined as Venus Lucifer – “Light Bringer”with the energy of a warrior goddess.

As an evening star, she is the goddess of love known as Venus Hesperus – “Carrier of Light”. Her feminine energy rules the night in exaltation while her daytime visibility is armed for battle with all the solar forces driving her masculine energy.

There is also a time that she travels behind the sun and astrologers call this the “Venus in the Underworld” phase. She is currently in her Morning Star Phase of the 584 day cycle.

Determining your Venus type is easy. First locate the Sun in your natal chart. If Venus is clockwise from the Sun, your Venus type is Lucifer, the Morning Star. On the other hand, if Venus is positioned counterclockwise from the Sun, your Venus type is of Hesperus, the Evening Star.

“When we consider Venus in the horoscope, it is important to distinguish its appearance by phase. As an evening star, it presents the archetypal energy that we most commonly associate with love: intimacy, sensitivity, sensuality, romanticism, and earthly pleasures. By contrast, as a morning star, Venus assumes the qualities of warrior: strategic, assertive, and highly motivated by emerging victorious in myriad pursuits. This expression reminds us that, as much as we associate Aphrodite with beauty and love, the mythology also points to a competitive side. “

Venus in Astrology

Venus oversees Taurus and Libra who some say are at odds with each other. Earthy Taurus is a fixed sign and Libra is a mutable air sign. Venus draws us to the finer things in life and her energies pull us toward seeking pleasures and luxuries.

Taurus Venus might want a practical meal of lasagna, while Libra Venus will go on and on about chocolates and wine. When we bring these two together, we get pleasure on many levels, experiencing them through every sense of the body and the soul. Particularly, Venus is associated primarily with touch, smell, and taste and will cause us to fall in love with things unique to us. Where Venus is placed in house and sign will let you know what inspires and moves you, what you relate to, and what you feel strongly about in matters of devotion and love. Venus embodies our ability to feel, move with grace, and love freely. She affects our ability to make money, appreciate ourselves and others, and our energies. When Venus is challenged, we become highly critical of others and ourselves. We become dissatisfied and don’t see all the good around us for which we should be thankful. Venus affects the laziness in us all, whether we can just lounge on a couch eating ice crea , or singing, dancing, and playing.

The Five Petal Flower of Venus – The 8 Year Journey

Over 8 years, the planet Venus completes 13 orbits of the sun, and during the eight years, Earth and Venus meet 5 times creating the petals known as the Venus rotational rose. 5 + 8 = 13 which are all number of the Fibonacci sequence.

In November 2021, I had my first live consultation about my natal chart from a Venus specialist named Wendy Groomes. I didn’t know much about my natal chart, I had very little understanding of astrological vocabulary and I was just barely in my process of meeting archetypes.

Recently reviewing that Zoom recording – I can reflect back and see that experience as a spark to shift some of my studies at NAU toward transformative adult learning and explorations of archetypes through literature.

According to Wendy, I was born with an extremely strong Venus energy field. Besides having Venus at my ascendent, and sitting next to my Sun and Moon in Leo, I was born just days before the August 29, 1963 Venus Superior Conjunction in Virgo. Otherwise known as a Cazimi – when a planet and the sun are in a tight hug of zero degrees.

Venus has many forms and she shape shifts for the times of a generations. She can be a morning star, an evening star, in retrograde, or hiding to do her Venusian Mystery School. She can be a warrior or a lover or when she is resting in the Underworld she is doing her Wild Rose transformational work.

More Venus Mathematics and Sacred Geometry

The mathematics of Venus and her rotation have been studied for hundreds, and thousands, of years. Lisa Lister in her book Venus: A Sacred Path. A Feminine Frequency. A Sensual Love Affair with Life shares that, “Some of my most favorite women throughout time and space – from Mary Magdalene to Eleanor of Aquitaine, and Hathor to Sophia, from Joan of Arc to Anne Boleyn…all knew the power that’s held in the cycle of Venus”.

For those who are familiar with Michelangelo’s Vitruvian Man, some say the drawing fits into the petal points of the Venus rotational rose creating another symbol of the pentagon star. Throughout history that five pointed star was associated with witchcraft and when the struggle around embracing femininity needed to be controlled or even extinguished the pentagram star became a satanic symbol.

Venus Star Point®

In the early 2000s, Guttman studied and then created the system of The Venus Star Point® (VSP) and has a website called SophiaVenus and many featured videos, YouTube interviews, and podcast appearances dedicated to explaining the Venus cycle and how it can be a powerful energy in one’s natal chart.

Arielle Guttman refers to Venus and the 8 year cycle as The Cosmic Heartbeat that is happening behind the scenes of the zodiac. When Venus enters a sign, it activates it, “like a rose in the garden…like a rosebud, waiting, and Venus activates the opening of the bloom”.
